It has been 50 years since the Feminist Movement took off, yet there are times when it feels like we are running in place.
Some years ago, my little cousin Bobby was hanging out with a few of his older cousins; including myself, and we had the music blaring, trying to convince him to dance. He told us that he did not like dancing because it was a lot of moving and not getting anywhere. Although I do love dancing, I have never forgotten what he said. Sometimes this is what our progress feels like. We are making all of this movement and not getting anywhere.
It is my belief that if we spent more time embracing, elevating and encouraging each other, we would be so much further than we are now. We need to celebrate the success and achievements of our sister, and take back our power.
Audre Lorde said ‘I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are different from my own.”
On a day when we are suppose to celebrate political, social, economic and cultural achievements of women, we need to first celebrate that in ourselves. It is time…past time, that we begin to encourage success in other women. Support each other, embrace and empower each other.
